Alice worked as a first aid trainer for more than ten years before transitioning into product management and joining the senior leadership team at Red Cross Training.
Margaret’s first aid story
“Without doing first aid training I am not sure whether I would have stopped, the training gave me confidence to help.’’

Find out how Margaret helped an older person at the scene of a serious car accident.
Margaret had completed a British Red Cross First Aid at Work training course in Aylesbury. Margaret was was driving home from work and witnessed a serious car accident.
Margaret added, “While others drove on, I pulled over in my car and noticed that an older person had been involved in the accident. They were very shaken and couldn’t get out of their car.’’
Margaret remained calm, checked the surroundings and checked that someone had called 999. Another person at the scene was with the other person involved with the collision.
Margaret said, “I remained with the older person whilst they were in their car. I held their hand and talked to them whilst we waited for the ambulance to arrive.
Thanks to my training, I felt more confident in my first aid skills and managed to stay calm yet maintain some authority in the situation. The training made me not put myself or others at risk, as I knew what needed to be done and had to help calm those who were involved and were upset during the situation.’’
While witnessing an accident like this can be distressing, the actions of the first person on the scene are hugely important.
Margaret added, “Without doing first aid training I am not sure whether I would have stopped, the training gave me the confidence to help. I have continued to refresh my first aid skills and I am just about to book onto my next course.’’
Margaret’s story highlights that sometimes in a first aid emergency, the most important thing you can do is simply be there.
