Amy's first aid story
“You truly can make a difference and possibly even save someone’s life’’

Find out how Amy helped a colleague who had a stroke while at work.
Amy had previously attended a British Red Cross First Aid at Work training course in Cardiff. Amy was at work and noticed that their colleague was feeling unwell.
Amy added, “I noticed that the right side of the face was drooping. I had attended a first aid at work course, the week before and immediately remembered to use the FAST test. I then noticed that their speech was slurred.’’
Amy remained calm and called 999 and remained with their colleague.
Amy said, “I felt incredibly confident with my first aid skills and managed to stay calm yet maintain some authority in the situation as I knew what needed to be done and had to help calm those who were involved and were upset during the situation.’’
Amy’s colleague was transferred to hospital where they made a good recovery.
Amy added, “I would 100% recommend anyone to complete a first aid training course. Not only is it a good skill to have at work, but it’s also something you can put into practice at home or at any given moment when needed. You truly can make a difference and possibly even save someone’s life.’’
How to help someone who is having a stroke
Strokes usually happen because of an interruption to the blood supply to the brain. If you suspect someone is having a stroke, use the FAST test, but remember stroke signs can vary, and you don't need to wait to see all of these. If you have any concerns, call 999 without delay.
1. Face
- Is there weakness on one side of their face?
2. Arms
- Can they raise both arms?
3. Speech
- Is their speech easily understood?
4. Time
- Time to call 999.
Amy’s story highlights that first aid isn’t just a workplace requirement, it’s a life-saving skill that can be used at home, in public, or wherever an emergency strikes. With the right training, you can step in confidently, make a real impact, and potentially save a life.
