What is an Paediatric First Aid course?
Paediatric First Aid training is a 2-day course to provide first aiders with the knowledge and skills to respond in emergencies in which there are babies or children of whom are in their care in a professional setting such as childminders and those in a nursery or pre-school.
The course content on day 1 includes:
- Dealing with an emergency
- Assessing a casualty, monitoring a casualty, where to get help, electrical incidents.
- Unresponsive and breathing baby and child
- Special consideration for a suspected spinal injury.
- Unresponsive and not breathing baby and child
- AED
- Chain of survival, The AED, using an AED, safety considerations (‘Children’ and ‘Babies’ only).
- Choking baby and child
- Hygiene techniques
- Bleeding and wounds
- Small wounds and bruises, small blisters and splinters, nosebleed, bites and stings, eye wounds, bleeding heavily from a wound (limb, embedded object in a wound, head bandages).
- Shock and internal bleeding
- First aid kits
- Burns
The course content on day 2 includes:
- Objects in the ears and nose
- Accident recording, reporting and administering medication
- Heat exhaustion
- Hypothermia
- Fever and febrile seizures
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Meningitis
- Asthma
- Seizures
- Severe allergic reaction
- Diabetic emergency
- Bone, muscle and joint injuries
- Broken bones, dislocations, strains and sprains, spinal injury.
- Head injury
- Harmful substances
- Poisoning and swallowed something harmful.
- Unresponsive and breathing adult
- Unresponsive and not breathing adult
- Choking adult
