What are the changes around allergies in schools?
From September 2026, schools across England are required to provide allergy awareness for all staff, following new statutory guidance from the Department for Education. The training should feature:

- improved incident recording and lessons learnt processes.
As part of the changes, schools must also:
- stock spare adrenaline auto-injectors for use in emergency situations
- have a comprehensive policy for supporting children with medical conditions, including Individual Healthcare Plans to record specific arrangements for individuals, such as an allergy management plan.
These measures build on the momentum of Benedict’s Law, a cross-party backed campaign calling for stronger, more consistent protection for those with food allergies, including the risk of severe allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis.
What causes children to have a severe allergic reaction in schools?
Allergic reactions are relatively common in children and are often mild but unpleasant; however, severe allergic reactions are less common and can affect breathing, making them a life-threatening emergency that requires urgent action.
Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that can develop within seconds or minutes of contact with a “trigger” and is an emergency. Common causes of severe allergic reactions in children at school are:
- accidental exposure during lunch or snack times
- cross contamination in food preparation
- shared classroom materials (e.g. craft supplies containing allergens)
- inadequate supervision during trips or clubs
- staff uncertainty about symptoms or when to administer adrenaline.
